Jewish Divorce

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 5:13 PM
A friend of mine has been told Oregon law cannot compel her husband to grant her a "get", a Jewish divorce, so she could remarry within the Jewish religion. Her husband is demanding she accept HIS concessions regarding the dissolution action in exchange for the get.

Do Oregon courts really have no authority in these matters? That's very trogolodyte of them.

so this is a fun thing ...

next year's travel plans are very, very up in the air right now. there is a lot to juggle, and as always, i'm trying to make time for as much as possible.

definites for 2010:
-park city
-nola
-austin
-adventures with [info]verybadhorse
-BLC 2010

considering:
-asheville
-WI (for trivia voyeurism)
-montreal/quebec city/QC
-overseas/out of country something

sundance is in january. [info]verybadhorse adventure no. 1 is slated for february. for march, i have options: if i go to austin then, i can do SXSW. nola and asheville are also on the table: i could piggy-back two of the three of these, which is my preferred method of travel. otherwise, all three cities are possibilities for spring or fall. trivia would be in stevens point, in april.

traditionally, i don't like to travel during summer, as it's both too warm to enjoy anywhere south of here, and generally too expensive. i'd make exceptions for BLC.

i'd like to get out of the country again next year (the international wishlist, so far, includes: new zealand, switzerland, india, ireland, scotland, nova scotia), but am not sure what's really attainable financially. i wonder if 2010 should just focus on people, the driving factors in pretty much all the (north american) destinations above (well, that and food).

as of late, i've been thinking about future travel destinations even further out of my comfort range (in other words, not just talking language barrier alone anymore), though i'm unsure of the fit. not that getting out of one's comfort zone is a bad thing (it isn't; i think there's something Significant that happens the first time you step out of the country in which you were born), but it warrants a lot of consideration. i'm well aware of my many -isms that would shadow over me in many location; sasha had indirectly talked me out of accompanying her to trinidad with numerous stories of how women/americans were treated there. but i mean, during the train ride through rural czech republic, i'm the type of girl whose biggest concerns were a) remembering what stop to get off at, b) remembering snippets of phrases in german (or where to point to on a ticket/map) and c) whether or not my iphone had service. seriously.

Are there still homes for sale in the Portland area that don't require you join a HOA? I flat out refuse to join one, but it seems that neighborhoods don't exist anymore without one. WTF.

/hater

Any advice or knowledge from real estate agents? Is it easy to search for homes that do not require some HOA membership?

1st world problem!

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 11:20 AM
I'm totally having a 1st world problem RIGHT NOW! You know how we have water pumped into our toilets and faucets from melt snow packs in rain kissed mountains? Well Portland Water Bureau decided they needed to IMPROVE the system that delivers this fresh water and have shut me off for 6 hours. I can't like *gasps* shower for a while and I have to man stink till they turn it back on!!!

Free indoor track?

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 10:44 AM
I'm in SE and wondered (because it's so cold) if there's anywhere to use an indoor track for free.

I usually run outside and I will again, when it's not so darn chilly. I hate treadmills and I'm not ready to accept defeat yet. I would walk at the mall if I was a speed-walker but I really try to run a little faster than that...

I was thinking somewhere like a community center or high school? I guess even an outdoor track might be better than a windy neighborhood course...Or college/community college? I am thinking about "trying" some gyms (you know, how they offer 2 free guest passes or whatever to check the place out) and maybe joining a gym (WITHOUT A CONTRACT) for just a few months while it's cold and snowy after New Year's when they start offering crazy membership deals.

I have winter gear. It just hurts to breathe when it's so cold out.

SO I guess there are two questions:
1. Any free indoor tracks (preferably in SE)
2. Any thoughts on a gym that doesn't charge too much for dues and wouldn't require you to sign a year contract?

YAY!!

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 5:50 AM
Coming home to Portland this week after over a year in Washington! I'm a 5th generation Oregonian, it's in my blood. I know that now. Not that Washington sucked, persay...ok, it kinda sucked. I just miss not pumping my own gas, not paying a sales tax, and having my paycheck raped by state taxes. Ok, maybe not so much that last one, but sacrifices must be made.
Just looking forward to coming home and thought I'd share and say HI!

Prepare to start flame war!

Now this isn't really a mock as such, more ultimate comeuppance, but I found it hilarious and thought I'd share.

I worked at a factory. It was a secure factory, with electronically locked main doors with keycard readers to keep people who weren't meant to be there out.
I had been on break, so was heading back to the factory from the canteen in a separate building. I was followed by a female co-worker who was about to go on duty.
I reached the door, swiped my card, opened it and entered, and held it for her as she approached, as a polite person would do.

I did not expect her reaction.
She stopped outside, a look of rage on her face, and bawled: "I don't need a MAN to do EVERYTHING for me!"
Baffled and faintly annoyed, I closed the door. Which, being a security door, immediately locked.

And here be the lesson: If you're a raging crazy Feminist type and are going to scream at someone who is just being polite and trying to make your life a little bit easier by holding open a security door, MAKE SURE YOU HAVEN'T LEFT YOUR SECURITY KEYCARD AT HOME.

I haven't laughed so much in years. When another male colleague approached to open the door from inside, I informed him that she didn't need a man to do everything for her. I briefly relayed the tale, and he laughed too. We stuck around until she had to go and get the (male) security guard to open the door for her. He laughed, too.
Crazy lady? Well, she didn't look too pleased when she stormed past.

At my boyfriend's church there is this girl who's about our age (read: 20 or so).

She's wrecked around five or so cars. One of the reasons why is she thinks that if she turns on the turn signal in a car, the car will turn by itself.

UGHHHHH.

To this day, no one will park beside her car in the church parking lot.

How she passed the driver's test I'll never know.

DP to the rescue...

darling DPers:

my CEO/boss will be in town this week from san franny, and i'm looking for a few suggestions for places to meet him for appetizers/cocktails. preferably:

-downtown
-nice atmosphere (read: no big-screen TVs playing The Game, pool tables, KENO)
-not a hotel bar (because, chances are, he's been there/stayed there)
-not a restaurant with a bar
-interesting/representative of portland in some way
-music/noise at a conversational volume
-really good drinks/appetizers (higher-end is OK, i won't be paying)

i'm trying to avoid places i frequent regularly for various reasons, and most of those are too loud or too dive-y in the first place. besides, i'm always interested in trying new places, so suggest away.

a corny joke & a question
